The National Archives (TNA) is the official archive of the UK government and for England and Wales, making available to the public a vast collection of historical records dating back over 1,000 years.

TNA is also an Independent Research Organisation (IRO), meaning we are eligible to lead UKRI-funded research. Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research into all aspects of our collections and activities is at the heart of what we do, as we become a digital archive by instinct and design, and seek to generate new knowledge with our collections. We work with vast data collections and a range of national and international university, heritage and industry partners on areas including digital research in humanities and social sciences, computer science, archival and information science, and heritage science and conservation.

The National Archives is looking for a Senior Research Software Engineer (RSE) to join an existing research project, Our Heritage, Our Stories: Linking and searching community-generated digital content to develop the people's national collection, part of the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s programme Towards a National Collection: Opening UK Heritage to the World (TaNC). The project will bring together a powerful partnership, including researchers in digital humanities, archives, history, linguistics, and computer science at our HEI partners, the Universities of Glasgow and Manchester, with world-leading archive and digital infrastructure development at The National Archives, the project's lead Independent Research Organisation.

We are looking for a creative and self-motivated Senior RSE to influence the technical direction of the project, with experience in areas such as human-computer interaction and cloud-computing infrastructure. You will be working within a multi-disciplinary team that will follow an agile way of working to deliver experimental and engaging interfaces, and software tools. You will join the wider digital research team and work closely with the project’s Agile Delivery Manager to the technical work of the project and mentor the team of two early-career RSEs. The team is jointly responsible for the delivery of The National Archives’ commitments to this nationally important programme and its outputs will inform the shape of the nation’s future collections infrastructure.

Our place of work is in the beautiful surroundings of Kew, a 10-minute walk from Underground and Overground stations. TNA boasts a collegial working environment and the excellent Civil Service benefits package. This includes flexible working, an on-site gym, wellbeing resources, and an opportunity to join the Civil Service Alpha Pension Scheme. Putting people at the forefront of our organisation, we are committed to enabling professional development and training for all our colleagues.

Although TNA normally operate a hybrid working arrangement we are open to the possibility of home based working for this particular role.

This is a full time post. However, requests for part-time working, flexible working and job share will be considered, taking into account at all times the operational needs of the Department.

We would particularly like to encourage applicants from backgrounds currently underrepresented in archives, including those who identify as Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT+), from Black, Asian and minority ethnic cultural backgrounds, those who are neurodivergent, and those with hidden or visible disabilities.

This is a Fixed Term Appointment until September 2024.
