The Center for Genome Architecture at Baylor College of Medicine is looking for a Research Associate. The Center's work lies on the intersection of biology, computer science, physics and mathematics and its primary focus is exploring the three-dimensional structure of genomes, in humans and across the tree of life.

The team's work has been featured on the cover of Nature, Science and Cell and has included seminal advances in a diverse array of fields including the invention of three dimensional genome sequencing, and consequent discoveries of the mechanisms of genome compartmentalization (Lieberman-Aiden et al., Science, 2009; Lieberman Aiden, Science, 2011) and loop extrusion (Sanborn & Rao et al., PNAS, 2015); the first reliable, genome-wide maps of chromatin looping (Rao & Huntley et al., Cell, 2014); the development of 3D genome surgery to modify genome folding using targeted mutations (Sanborn & Rao et al., PNAS, 2015); the development of highly efficient tools to visualize and analyze genomic contact data (Durand, Robinson et al., Cell Systems, 2016; Durand, Shamim, Cell Systems, 2016; Robinson et al., Cell Systems, 2018); the development of 3D-DNA and Juicebox Assembly Tools for Hi-C assisted scaffolding of genomes to chromosome length (Dudchenko et al., Science, 2017); the discovery of condensin II in defining the major type of 3D genome architecture across tree of life (Hoencamp et al., Science, 2021).

  • Maintain, manipulate and occasionally establish mammalian cell lines (experience in mammalian cell culture is essential, experience with iPSC culturing and transformation as well as establishing primary fibroblast culture is preferred)
  • Maintain a large biological specimens repository, ensure long-term integrity and preservation of collection, which include genetic material and linked ancillary digital metadata, improve collection and storage protocols
  • Organize and prepare documentation necessary for specimen accession, including national and international permits and associated documentation
  • Respond to specimen requests, data inquiries, specimen photo requests etc
  • Participate in data analysis
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of less experienced research staff and occasionally assist with grant writing
  • Participate in overseeing day-to-day laboratory operation and maintaining security protocols and standards

  • Master's degree in Basic Science or a related field. Experience in lieu of degree will not be accepted.
  • Three years of relevant experience typically as a Research Assistant, Research Technician or Postdoctoral Fellow/Associate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in basic fundamental molecular biology techniques (such as gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, PCR, qPCR, etc.)
  • Experience in mammalian cell culture and aseptic techniques
  • Experience with maintenance and establishment of primary fibroblast cell cultures, iPSC culturing and transformation strongly preferred
  • Experience in one or more of the following is strongly preferred: next generation sequencing library preparation; functional genomics (RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, ATAC-Seq)
  • Data analytic skills
